223.00 Student Employees

Definitions:

Student Employee:  A student employee is defined as a student currently attending SKC as a registered student and employed by the College on a part-time basis. 

  1. Hiring, Orientation, and Supervision
    1. In order to qualify for a SKC student employment position, a student must be accepted for enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in a program leading to a degree or certificate. 
    2. College employees who wish to hire a student employee must provide the Human Resources Department with a position description, funding source, and length of employment using established college procedures.  Student employees are not allowed to begin work until all required paperwork is completed and submitted to the Human Resources Department. 
    3. Positions which are open only to students, e.g. internships or work-study positions, do not need to be advertised in accordance with SKC hiring policies. Positions which are open to students and individuals who are not students must be advertised in accordance with SKC Policy 203.00.
    4. Orientation, supervision, and evaluation of student employees is the responsibility of the department for which the student works. All student employees must complete the College’s required new employee training as paid time, including FERPA, cybersecurity, and Title IX training. 
    5. Upon hire, student employees are subject to all college policies during the time they are working for the College. 
    6. Student pay rates are governed by the SKC pay schedule. Student employees do not accrue leave or benefits and are not eligible for holiday pay.  Student employees are not eligible for overtime pay. 
    7. Student employees must maintain a credit load of at least six (6) credits per quarter and remain in good academic standing as defined in the SKC college catalog. Student employees may not exceed 29 working hours per week when classes are in session and no more than 38 hours per week during vacation or break periods. Students who work over break periods (e.g. summer, winter) must be registered for the next academic term.
    8. Students who are on academic probation must be terminated from their student employment position prior to the following term. Students who graduate and are not registered for the following term may stay in an internship or other position until the beginning of the next academic term.
  1. Student Employees Maintain FERPA Rights
    1. Records of employment for student employees are subject to Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) policies and must be protected from inappropriate access. The hiring department or supervisor should not keep hard copies of student employment paperwork.  Electronic copies must be retained in a password-protected, secure file.
