239.00 Outside Employment

The primary obligation of full-time employees of Salish Kootenai College is to fulfill their official college duties. Full-time employees are expected to devote required time and effort to their institutional responsibilities as stated in college policies and the employee offer letter and job description. However, the College recognizes that individuals and the College may benefit from employee involvement in work for other organizations. Employees may engage in outside work beyond the scope of their official college duties in accordance with this policy. Outside employment must be reported to Human Resources.

Definitions:
Official College Duties: An employee’s duties within the specific scope of employment as defined by the job description.
Outside Employment: Outside employment is defined as work for any non-College entity or person, including self-employment, employment at another business or entity, or professional services such as consulting provided to any entity or person other than the College, if the employee receives compensation for providing such services. Compensation may include cash payment, share of profits, or other tangible benefits.

  1. Policy
    1. Employees must disclose all outside employment using Procedure 239.00
    2. Outside employment may not be performed during an employee’s regular working hours and/or responsibilities as stated in the employee’s job description. Outside employment should not conflict, delay, or otherwise interfere with an employee’s assigned duties.
    3. Outside employment must not create a conflict of interest as defined in Policy 234.10.
    4. Outside employment must not diminish the employee’s efficiency in performing that employee’s primary work obligations.
    5. SKC employees must not use the College’s name, logo, or images in connection with outside employment except upon written authorization by the college president.
    6. In general, outside employment activities must not use college facilities, equipment, or services. If such use is needed, the college president will consider the circumstances governing such usage. Specific written authorization by the president is required.
    7. Outside employment must not create or have the potential to create conditions in which the College or the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes would be potential negative publicity.
